When a nerve becomes trapped within the foot the repeated pressure causes damage. This results in enlargement or inflammation of the nerve causing either discomfort or numbness, sometimes alternating between the two, or severe pain.

Treatment begins by addressing footwear and many times this will be sufficient to correct the problem. However, persistent pain may require surgical intervention to release the nerve.

Surgery will usually provide a permanent and effective solution.
